Summary: Overuse of injections exposes patients to side effects, and unsafe practices can increase the risk of disease. In developed countries, realisation of the risks associated with unsafe injections resulted in the advent of the single use disposable syringe. On the south Asian subcontinent, reuse of syringes is common in health facilities in rural communities and slum areas of cities. This is a particular problem in Pakistan.
