Summary: In the United Kingdom newly qualified doctors must show no impairment to fitness to practise before they are provisionally registered. The UK government asked the General Medical Council (GMC) to consider the issue of medical student registration. The GMC rejected this proposal; it determined that effective regulation would be better achieved by engaging with students and helping them to understand the responsibilities of their status. It also considered that with guidance and support, medical schools would be able to perform sufficiently robust investigations to identify students who, because of conduct or health issues, would be unsuited to continue their studies and qualify as doctors.
